Parental Influence

November 15, 2025

“What parts of your parents or guardians do you notice reflected in yourself? What traints, both good and bad, are you inheriting from them?”

Frugality as expressed by buying things on sale, or taking something that is free. Saving leftovers. I don’t always remmember to use them.

My father and both grandfathers made use of things reclaimed to make projects.

Keeping something for a long time, often beyond its decent utility. I remember hearing a story that when he was in the Air Force, my father kept wearing a hat long after it was falling apart.

Those are all pretty much the same thing. I didn’t really realize how much it was the case until my brother told me that despite being a big fan of hockey, the only times my father took him to a hockey game was when someone had hooked them up with free tickets.

“What are 5 ways you have changed in the last 10 years?”

I have become more comfortable with myself as myself. I am less inclined to change myself to be appropriate for a partner. This means I don’t have a partner, and I’ve become ok with that, to some extent.

I have taken more control of my diet, and consequently I often eat the same thing for days on end.

I don’t worry about my car being clean - looking like it’s a homeless person’s car makes it less interesting to steal from

In my career, I am less interested in preparing myself for whatever the next step is.

I’ve often prioritized getting used clothes, but I am more willing to buy certain things new like shoes, a good jacket, etc.
